Ajit Agarkar Set to Step Down as BCCI Chief Selector, Informs Board of Decision

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is preparing to begin the process of finding a new chairman of selectors after Ajit Agarkar informed the board’s senior officials that he does not intend to continue in the position.

Sources close to Agarkar said he has already communicated his decision to the BCCI. His current tenure as chairman of the senior selection committee is scheduled to end on October 4.

The development came shortly after BCCI member units authorised the board’s office-bearers to take a decision on Agarkar’s future during the board’s 95th Annual General Meeting.

At the conclusion of the AGM, a senior BCCI official said the office-bearers had been given the authority to take decisions concerning the selection committees, without providing specific details about Agarkar’s continuation.

BCCI Also Begins Junior Selection Committee Process

The board is simultaneously working on appointments to all five positions in the junior selection committee.

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said the board has received a large number of applications and expects the selection process to be completed within the next two weeks.

He said the shortlisted candidates will be forwarded to the BCCI’s cricket committee, which will make the final selections for the junior panel.

“We have received a very large number of applicants,” Saikia said, adding that the process is expected to be completed within the next 10 to 15 days as the tenure of all five existing junior selectors is nearing its end.

The BCCI’s 95th AGM was attended by representatives of affiliated state cricket associations. Former India captain Sourav Ganguly represented the Cricket Association of Bengal, while former India fast bowler Venkatesh Prasad attended on behalf of the Karnataka State Cricket Association.

• Fielding Coach Appointment Remains Under Review
• The BCCI also discussed the appointment of Subhadeep Ghosh as India’s fielding coach.

Saikia said Ghosh’s appointment has initially been made for a short period. Ghosh is also associated with the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru as a fielding coach.

The board will assess his performance before deciding whether to extend his engagement with the Indian team.

Saikia said the BCCI would also consider feedback from the team’s management before taking a final decision on the coach’s continuation.

With Agarkar expected to leave the chief selector’s position and the junior selection panel also due for a complete overhaul, the BCCI is now preparing for significant changes across its selection committees.
