Portugal Keen to Welcome Cristiano Ronaldo Back Despite Disciplinary Proceedings
Portugal remain keen to have Cristiano Ronaldo back in the national team despite initiating disciplinary proceedings against the veteran forward over his departure from the squad’s camp ahead of their Nations League fixture against Denmark.
The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) has confirmed that disciplinary action is underway against the 41-year-old captain, who reportedly left the team’s base in Copenhagen last week following a disagreement with head coach Jorge Jesus over his role in the side.
Despite the controversy, FPF president Pedro Proenca has indicated that the federation, coaching staff and players are united in their desire to see Ronaldo return once the matter is resolved. The final decision on any punishment will rest with the federation’s independent Disciplinary Committee.
Portugal Expresses Desire for Ronaldo’s Return
According to Portuguese newspaper A Bola, the FPF has launched formal disciplinary proceedings against Ronaldo and classified the case as urgent.
The federation reportedly stated that the player had been placed under a non-automatic preventive suspension, in addition to the automatic preventive suspension that applied before the proceedings were formally initiated.
However, the disciplinary action has not diminished Portugal’s desire to welcome its captain back into the squad. Proenca emphasised that all parties involved had expressed their willingness to see the forward return to the national team.
According to comments reported by A Bola, Proenca said the federation, its president, the national team coach, the captain and the players had all conveyed their desire for Ronaldo’s return.
The FPF chief also clarified that the federation’s leadership would not decide the punishment. Instead, the matter would be handled independently by the Disciplinary Committee, which has the authority to determine the outcome.
Disagreement With Jorge Jesus
Ronaldo’s departure reportedly followed frustration over his role in Portugal’s match against Norway, in which he was left unused. Reports suggested that the forward believed Jesus had gone back on his word twice regarding his involvement with the team.
The disagreement reportedly created tension between the player and the coach, although Jesus denied having made any such agreement with Ronaldo.
Portugal subsequently secured a 2-1 victory, while the coach indicated that the possibility of Ronaldo returning to the squad remained open.
The incident has prompted questions about the forward’s immediate future with the national team. Nevertheless, the federation’s latest statements indicate that Portugal does not want the dispute to permanently affect Ronaldo’s international career.
Ronaldo Apologises for His Actions
Ronaldo addressed the controversy on Tuesday, apologising for not acknowledging supporters after the match against Norway and for leaving his teammates.
The experienced forward also reiterated his willingness to represent Portugal again, signalling that he would remain available for selection after completing any punishment imposed over the incident.
With disciplinary proceedings still underway, the timing of Ronaldo’s return will depend on the independent committee’s decision. For now, Portugal have made their position clear: they want their captain back in the national team, while allowing the disciplinary process to proceed independently.
