Taniya Wins Historic Silver, Becomes First Indian To Secure Youth Olympics Beach Wrestling Medal

India’s Taniya created history at the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games by becoming the country’s first wrestler to win a beach wrestling medal at the prestigious international event. She clinched silver in the women’s 75kg category after narrowly losing 1-2 to China’s Min Zhao in the final on Saturday.

Although Taniya missed out on the top podium finish, her performance throughout the tournament was remarkable. Her achievement was particularly significant as beach wrestling made its debut at the Summer Youth Olympic Games, giving India its first medal in the discipline at the event.

China’s Min Zhao, who claimed the gold, entered the final with an impressive international record. She had previously won the women’s 69kg title at the 2025 U17 World Wrestling Championships in Athens, defeating Germany’s Ayla Sahin 13-2.

TANIYA DOMINATES HER WAY INTO THE FINAL

Taniya enjoyed an excellent start to her campaign, defeating Germany’s Mia Bauer 3-1 in her opening bout. She continued her winning momentum with a convincing 3-0 victory over Greece’s Vasiliki Karavanou before overcoming Estonia’s Merily Vaester 4-1 in her final group-stage contest.

Her three consecutive victories helped her finish at the top of her group and qualify for the semi-finals.

The Indian wrestler then faced a formidable challenge against American contender Matilda Ann Hruby, who had won the 75kg gold medal at the U17 Beach Wrestling World Championships in Baku in August. Hruby had also dominated that competition, winning all five of her bouts by fall.

However, Taniya delivered a composed performance to defeat the American 3-1 and advance to the gold-medal contest. Despite her narrow defeat in the final, she finished the tournament with four victories from five bouts.

Taniya had also impressed at the 2026 U17 World Wrestling Championships in Baku, where she secured bronze in the women’s 69kg freestyle category after defeating Poland’s Maja Wejchan 12-2 in the medal bout.

INDIA’S MEDAL COUNT REACHES SEVEN

Taniya’s historic silver took India’s medal tally at the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games to seven, including three silver and four bronze medals.

Before her achievement, Indian athletes had secured six medals across four sporting disciplines.

Khushbu Darjada won silver in the women’s 63kg judo category, while Tanvi Patri finished second in women’s singles badminton.

Swimming contributed three medals to India’s campaign. Dhinidhi Desinghu claimed bronze in both the women’s 100m and 200m freestyle events, while Tirthank Pegu won bronze in the men’s 200m butterfly, becoming the first Indian male swimmer to secure a Youth Olympics medal.

In wushu, Rajkumari Lanchenbi Chanu added another bronze medal in the women’s changquan combined event.

Taniya’s historic performance has further strengthened India’s campaign in Dakar while opening a new chapter for the country’s beach wrestling programme. Her silver medal is a landmark achievement, particularly as the discipline makes its first appearance at the Youth Olympic Games.
