AIFF Defends Brazil Friendly Decision, Rejects Claims Of ASEAN Cup Penalty
The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has defended its decision to withdraw India from the inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026, choosing instead to prioritise the national team’s high-profile friendly against Brazil.
India pulled out of the tournament last week after its schedule conflicted with the Brazil fixture, which is set to be played at Kolkata’s Salt Lake Stadium on October 3. The ASEAN Cup is scheduled from September 21 to October 6.
The decision sparked debate within Indian football, with questions raised over the sporting value of prioritising a friendly against Brazil over a competitive tournament. The AIFF, however, said the Brazil fixture was approved through the federation’s established institutional process.
AIFF Defends Brazil Fixture
The federation said the match against the five-time world champions could have a significant impact on Indian football beyond the result on the pitch. “The match will give a morale boost to the Indian national team while driving fans towards Indian football, the impact of which is unquantifiable,” the AIFF said.
It also rejected suggestions that the fixture was a one-sided arrangement, describing it as an international sporting opportunity agreed upon by the football federations of both countries. “The match is a mutually agreed international sporting opportunity between two football federations and should not be portrayed as a one-sided arrangement,” it said.
With the ASEAN Cup overlapping with the Brazil friendly, India faced a scheduling conflict that made participation in both events impractical.
AIFF Denies Automatic Financial Penalty
The federation also pushed back against claims that India’s withdrawal from the ASEAN Cup had triggered a predetermined fine. The AIFF described such reports as “incorrect claims” and said there was no basis for stating that the decision had automatically resulted in a financial penalty.
The federation also expressed concern over the circulation of figures and allegations about its finances. “The AIFF is also concerned about the public circulation of unverified figures and claims regarding its finances without any supporting basis or documentation,” it said.
The federation maintained that discussions and criticism of its decisions were legitimate, but insisted that statements about its finances and use of funds should be supported by reliable evidence.
Federation Warns Of Legal Action
The AIFF also issued a warning that it could pursue legal remedies if what it considers false or defamatory claims continue to be circulated. “The AIFF respects the democratic right to express opinions on Indian football. However, statements concerning the Federation’s finances and use of funds must be based on facts and verifiable information,” it said.
The federation said inaccurate claims could harm Indian football’s reputation and standing both within the country and internationally. The AIFF added that those making the allegations may have the interests of Indian football at heart but could be acting on incorrect information.
However, it warned that if such claims continued to be knowingly published or circulated, it would consider “appropriate legal remedies” against those responsible.
