As a flurry of celebrities arrived at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York on May 6 for the highly-anticipated fashion extravaganza Met Gala 2024, the venue legit turned into ‘The Garden of Time’ (the dress code).

This year’s green-tinted carpet surrounded by foliage witnessed celebrities flaunting the flower power in an unabashed and ostentatious manner. Zendaya, Jennifer Lopez, Kim Kardashian, Cardi B led the fashion parade with noteworthy looks at the fashion’s biggest night.

Alia Bhatt, Isha Ambani, Natasha Poonawalla and Mona Patel represented India and put forth some of the most spectacular looks witnessed at Met Gala 2024. Indian designers had a major moment too – from Sabyasachi and Rahul Mishra to Gaurav Gupta, their creations were proudly flaunted at the Met. Sabyasachi even walked the Met Gala carpet as a guest. (Yes, that happened).

Read on as we bring you the biggest fashion highlights from Met Gala 2024:

Alia Bhatt’s Sabyasachi saree moment
Alia returned to the Met Gala this year after making a dreamy debut in 2023. This year, she took an ethereal floral Sabyasachi saree to the red carpet.

The power blue saree boasted a beauteous symphony of hand embroidery, bead work, sparkling fringes and floral accents. The colour palette, soft and subtle, was homage to nature’s beauty echoing the earth, sky and sea.

Alia’s stunning saree came not only with a floor-sweeping train but also a pretty blouse with a delicate bow detail at the back. A bejewelled headband, matching heavy earrings and soft makeup and elevated hairbun featuring braids completed her look.

Isha Ambani’s floral fantasy in Rahul Mishra
For Met Gala 2024, Isha Ambani embodied floral fantasy like no one else.

She wore a custom-made Rahul Mishra saree-gown featuring the most exquisite train, entirely covered in the designer’s signature floral motifs. The dazzling golden gown boasted delicate samples of flowers, butterflies, and dragonflies, and took over 10,000 hours to complete.

No Ambani look is ever complete without an assemblage of impeccable jewels. For the Met 2024, Isha flaunted nature-inspired jewellery pieces designed by Viren Bhagat, including a pair of lotus hand bracelets, parrot earrings and a floral choker.

Zendaya’s double glam

Zendaya, a co-chair at the Met Gala 2024, served her fashion duties really well in two outfits. She turned up wearing a dramatic blue and green dress by Maison Margiela. Her outfit in peacock hues featured a headpiece and surreal leaf accents. She rocked it with vamp-style makeup, and brought the fashion drama that Met Gala red carpets are known for.

In a surprising fashion move, Zendaya changed into a black Givenchy gown by John Galliano, with an immaculate floral headpiece by Alexander McQueen.

It was the show-stopping look. Period.

Jennifer Lopez’s near-naked gown
JLo, also a co-host for the Met 2024, exuded ethereal glam in a sparkling sheer Schiaparelli gown that hugged her like second skin.

The outfit was replete with silver sleeves and was teamed with an unmissable bird-motif necklace with a diamond of over 20 carats at its centre.

Natasha Poonawalla goes beyond florals
Entrepreneur and philanthropist Natasha Poonawalla was among the few celebrities who perceived the dress code beyond florals. She collaborated with designer John Galliano and rocked an abstract gown with a waist-cinching silhouette and matching headgear.

Mindy Kaling’s Aishwarya Rai moment?
Mindy Kaling attended Met Gala 2024 wearing a sculpted creation by Indian designer Gaurav Gupta. The gown she rocked was a strikingly similar version of the ensemble Aishwarya Rai Bachchan had donned during the Cannes Film Festival 2022.

Cardi B, high on drama

Cardi B once again outdid her unsaid duty of bringing a drama galore to the red carpet. This time, she did so by enveloping herself in an all-black tulle gown with a huge train. Not just her outfit, but her emerald and diamond jewels stole the show as well. Did she take cues from Nita Ambani?

Mona Patel’s epic debut
Another Indian name that stole the show at Met Gala 2024 is Mona Patel. The diva, who is a businesswoman and philanthropist, was styled by none other than Law Roach for the occasion. The debutante rocked a dream-like Iris Van Herpen gown featuring layered floral accents and bold sheer sides.

Patel hails from Vadodara and moved to the US. She is the founder of Couture For Cause, a non-profit organisation where she combines fashion and fundraising to support important causes.

Sabyasachi at the Met
Fashion designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee also posed on the coveted Met Gala carpet. His fashion pick for the night was an embroidered cotton duster coat from his label’s new collection, layered with tourmalines, pearls, emeralds and diamonds from his jewellery line.

Oh & Don’t Breathe ft. Kim K
Kim Kardashian, infamous for her extra-slinky outfits, returned with yet another unbreathable dress at the Met. She accentuated her slim waist in a sparkling silver figure-tight corset dress by Maison Margiela.

While the bodice resembled a knitted cardigan wrap, her dress flowed into metallic florals that complemented the dress code well.

Tyla’s sand dress
Grammy-winning South African singer Tyla made a sensational Met debut in a sand dress. The custom-made Balmain dress, with a corset-inspired silhouette, was sculpted to such perfection that she had to be lifted up the stairs. A representation of the ‘sand of time,’ the beige outfit featured a floor-sweeping train and a sand texture.

In another interesting addition, she swapped a regular handbag for an hourglass.

Rita Ora in nothing else but beads
Bold is an understatement for singer and fashion enthusiast Rita Ora’s Met Gala look this year. The diva arrived wearing a nude shapewear slightly covered with colourful cascading beads.

Met Geela ft. Doja Cat
A T-shirt at the world’s biggest fashion night? Doja Cat, otherwise known for making waves with her eccentric fashion game, committed the blasphemy of showing up in a wet T-shirt gown at the Met Gala.

And some more blah’s…
Many failed to hit the mark this year at the Met. While Doja Cat topped the list of worst-dressed celebs, Kylie Jenner, Gigi Hadid, Dua Lipa and Lana Del Rey joined her as well.

And, a Katy Perry look that never happened
It is AI’s world and we are just living in it! No wonder, the internet fell for an AI-generated photograph of Katy Perry clad in a voluminous floral gown. Had it been real, it would have been a superb fashion moment, but it was just another ultra-realistic AI photo (far from reality).
