Japan PM Takaichi’s Party Poised for Landslide in Lower House, Asahi Poll Shows

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) is set for a landslide victory in next week’s lower house election, according to a Sunday survey by the Asahi newspaper.

The poll suggests the LDP could well exceed a majority of 233 seats out of 465, up from its current 198 seats. With coalition partner Japan Innovation Party (Ishin), the ruling alliance may reach around 300 seats.

Such a strong showing would reinforce Takaichi’s leadership within the party and give her a mandate for expansionary fiscal policies, potentially raising concerns about Japan’s finances and pushing bond yields higher.

Meanwhile, the largest opposition group, the Centrist Reform Alliance, is struggling and could lose nearly half its 167 seats, the survey indicated. Takaichi’s coalition currently holds a slim lower house majority but remains in the minority in the upper house.
