Babar Azam Ends Pakistan’s Away Test Drought, Levels Series Against West Indies

Pakistan finally ended their three-year wait for an away Test victory as Babar Azam’s side defeated the West Indies by eight wickets in the second Test at Queen’s Park Oval, Port of Spain, on Wednesday. The win helped Pakistan level the two-match series 1-1 and snapped a worrying streak of eight consecutive away Test defeats.

The victory marked Pakistan’s first overseas Test win since their triumph over Sri Lanka in Galle in July 2023, which had also come under Babar Azam’s captaincy. After that success, Pakistan endured a prolonged slump away from home, losing eight straight Tests. During Shan Masood’s tenure, the team failed to register a single away Test victory in seven matches before the Pakistan Cricket Board reinstated Babar as captain ahead of the West Indies and England tours.

The result also ended Pakistan’s five-year wait for a Test win in the Caribbean and came as a timely response after their 90-run defeat in the series opener. Despite levelling the series, Pakistan remain at the bottom of the 2025-27 ICC World Test Championship standings.

Abdullah Shafique Stars, Bowlers Seal the Win

Pakistan’s comeback was built on a dominant first-innings performance led by Abdullah Shafique, whose superb 160 powered the visitors to 387 in reply to the West Indies’ 344. Babar Azam added a composed 88 but was once again denied a Test century. Shafique also created history by becoming the first Pakistan batter since 1977 to score 150 or more in a Test innings in the West Indies.

Holding a 43-run first-innings lead, Pakistan’s bowlers took complete control in the second innings. Sajid Khan claimed four wickets, while Ali Usman picked up two as the West Indies were dismissed for just 117.

Chasing a modest target of 75, Pakistan comfortably reached 77/2 in 23.3 overs. Babar Azam remained unbeaten on 24, while Shafique finished unbeaten on 24 as Pakistan sealed an emphatic eight-wicket victory.

Confidence Boost Ahead of England Tour

The win provides Pakistan with a major confidence boost ahead of their challenging Test series in England later this month. Babar Azam’s return as Test captain has delivered an immediate positive impact, ending the team’s long overseas losing streak and restoring belief within the squad.

Although Pakistan still have ground to make up in the World Test Championship standings, the victory showcased the value of experienced performers. Shafique’s match-defining century, Babar’s steady contribution and a disciplined bowling effort combined to deliver one of Pakistan’s most significant away Test victories in recent years.
