Canada Reaffirms Support for Greenland Amid Trump’s Threats.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Friday reiterated Ottawa’s unwavering support for Greenland and Denmark, responding to repeated remarks by former US President Donald Trump suggesting Washington could assert control over the Arctic territory.
Speaking from Beijing, Carney emphasized Canada’s commitment to Denmark as a NATO ally, saying, “We are NATO partners with Denmark. Our full partnership stands. Our obligations under Article 5 and Article 2 stand, and we stand fully behind those.” He added that Canada will continue backing both Denmark and NATO in the face of external pressures.
Carney also noted discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping regarding Greenland’s sovereignty, saying, “I found much alignment of views” on the right of the people of Greenland to determine their own future without interference.
Trump has repeatedly claimed the United States needs Greenland for national security, suggesting it could be taken “whether they like it or not,” and has threatened tariffs against countries opposing his plans. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio echoed the idea of purchasing Greenland, which officials in Greenland and Denmark have firmly rejected.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen warned that any US takeover would undermine NATO, while Arctic experts dismissed Trump’s concerns about potential Russian or Chinese influence as exaggerated.
Canada has meanwhile strengthened its Arctic presence, maintaining a continuous military footprint on land, sea, and air. European nations have also deployed troops to Greenland alongside Denmark, highlighting the growing strategic importance of the region amid rising geopolitical tensions.
