Club World Cup: Atletico Crash Out as Inter Miami Survive Late Scare to Advance.

A dramatic night in the Club World Cup saw Atletico Madrid suffer an early exit despite a final-day victory, while Inter Miami survived a late collapse to narrowly secure their spot in the knockout rounds alongside Palmeiras.

Inter Miami Let Two-Goal Lead Slip but Reach Last 16
At Fort Lauderdale’s DRV PNK Stadium, Inter Miami appeared to be cruising after goals from Tadeo Allende and Luis Suárez gave them a commanding 2-0 lead over Palmeiras. But the Brazilian champions mounted a late comeback, scoring twice in the final ten minutes through Paulinho and Mauricio to force a 2-2 draw.

Despite surrendering their lead, Inter Miami secured second place in Group A on goal difference, finishing level on five points with Palmeiras. Al-Ahly and Porto, who played out a chaotic 4-4 draw in the group’s other fixture, were eliminated.

Inter coach Javier Mascherano, reflecting on the result, said:

“It was a great game from us. It’s difficult to play against one of the best teams in South America. Maybe at the end we had the game in our hands, so the feeling is strange, but before the tournament, if someone told me we’d perform like this, I would have taken it.”

Lionel Messi, largely quiet throughout, nearly brought the house down with a dipping volley that flew just over the bar. Suárez, subdued for much of the match, made his mark with a sharp finish from a tight angle in the 65th minute.

Palmeiras, who topped the group thanks to superior goal difference, will now face domestic rivals Botafogo. Inter Miami’s reward: a blockbuster last-16 clash with European champions Paris Saint-Germain—Messi’s former club.

Atletico Madrid Exit Despite Win
Elsewhere, Atletico Madrid’s Club World Cup hopes came to an abrupt end, as their 1-0 win over Botafogo wasn’t enough to overturn the damage from their earlier 4-0 thrashing by PSG. Needing a significant goal margin to qualify, Diego Simeone’s men fell short despite a spirited performance.

Botafogo advanced alongside PSG from Group B, with the French side rounding off their campaign with a comfortable 2-0 win over Seattle Sounders. Goals from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Achraf Hakimi ensured PSG topped the group unbeaten, while the Sounders exited without a point—despite hosting all three of their matches.

Atletico’s early exit adds further pressure on Simeone’s side, who had eyed the expanded Club World Cup as a prime opportunity to claim international silverware. Their failure to advance underlines a growing vulnerability among European sides, with Chelsea now in danger of elimination from Group D after a surprise defeat to Flamengo.
