Conflicting Claims Cloud IIM-Calcutta Rape Allegation; Police Continue Probe.

A second-year MBA student at IIM Calcutta has been arrested after a woman alleged she was raped inside a hostel on campus. However, the case has taken a dramatic turn after the woman’s father publicly denied any assault, contradicting her formal complaint.

The woman, a psychological counsellor by profession, approached Haridevpur police station on Friday evening and submitted a handwritten complaint. She claimed that she was offered pizza and water during a visit to the hostel, after which she felt dizzy and lost consciousness. Upon waking, she alleged she had been raped and tortured.

Kolkata Police subsequently filed an FIR against the student, who hails from Karnataka, under Sections 64 (rape) and 123 (administering drugs or poison) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and arrested him around midnight.

However, on Saturday, the woman’s father gave a conflicting account to the media. He claimed that there was no assault and that his daughter had fainted after falling from an auto-rickshaw. “She is fine and resting. No one misbehaved with her,” he said, adding that the arrested student was unknown to their family.

Despite the father’s claims, police confirmed that the FIR was based on a signed complaint submitted directly by the woman. A police source said she had first visited Thakurpukur police station, from where she was directed to Haridevpur—under whose jurisdiction the IIM campus falls. She was accompanied by a female officer while filing the complaint.

Meanwhile, the accused was produced before the Alipore court on Friday and remanded to seven days of police custody.

What Police Told the Court
In its submission, Kolkata Police said the incident occurred on July 11 between 11:45 am and 8:35 pm. According to investigators, the accused had invited the woman to his hostel room under the pretext of seeking counselling. There, he allegedly offered her food and water, after which she felt dizzy.

Police told the court that the accused “committed forceful sexual intercourse without her consent” while she was incapacitated. They added that the arrest was made based on “credible source information” and subsequent identification.

Investigators said they had seized the accused’s clothing and mobile phone after recording his statement. Based on new findings, they have amended the FIR to include additional charges under BNS: Section 127(2) (wrongful confinement), Section 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt), and Section 76 (assault).

An internal inquiry has now been initiated into the father’s statement, which contradicts the complainant’s written account. The case continues to unfold amid conflicting narratives and ongoing forensic investigation.
