500-Metre Mayur Vihar Underpass Proposed To Ease Delhi-UP Road Congestion

Delhi could soon get a new underpass near the Crown Plaza traffic signal in Mayur Vihar Phase 1, with the Public Works Department (PWD) examining a proposal aimed at easing congestion on one of east Delhi’s busiest routes.

The proposed underpass, expected to be around 500 metres long, would allow vehicles travelling from the DND side towards Chilla and Trilokpuri to bypass the crowded Crown Plaza junction.

If the project moves forward, thousands of daily commuters could avoid one of the major traffic signals on the route, potentially reducing travel delays during peak hours.

Underpass To Separate Through Traffic

The Crown Plaza junction currently handles several types of traffic at the same time, including vehicles travelling through the corridor, local traffic and turning movements.

During busy periods, these traffic streams converge at the junction, resulting in bottlenecks and long queues.

Under the proposed plan, vehicles travelling towards Chilla and Trilokpuri would use the underpass, allowing through traffic to bypass the signal.

Local and turning traffic would continue to use the road at ground level.

Officials are also examining the possibility of developing a rotary at the surface level to improve traffic movement around the junction.

Exact Alignment Yet To Be Finalised

Although the proposed underpass is expected to be approximately 500 metres long, its final alignment has not yet been decided.

The PWD is currently examining how the structure could be integrated with the existing road network. Officials are also assessing potential entry and exit locations and how traffic would be regulated above the underpass.

The proposal is still at the feasibility stage, meaning construction has not yet been approved.

Before the project can move ahead, authorities will have to assess traffic patterns, engineering requirements and the impact on existing infrastructure.

Underground Utilities Under Scanner

One of the key components of the feasibility assessment is mapping underground utilities along the proposed route.

The study will identify water pipelines, electricity cables, gas networks, telecom infrastructure and other underground services.

Any utility found to conflict with the proposed alignment may need to be protected, shifted or modified before construction begins.

Such work will be crucial to determining whether the proposed route is technically viable and how much additional infrastructure shifting may be required.

• Tree Survey Also Planned
• The PWD will also survey trees located along the proposed corridor.

The assessment will record their species, size, condition and exact location, with officials expected to explore options to retain as many trees as possible.

Any impact on the existing green cover will therefore form part of the broader feasibility assessment.

Mayur Vihar Connectivity In Focus

If implemented, the underpass could remove a major traffic stop for vehicles travelling towards Chilla and Trilokpuri, potentially improving traffic flow through the Crown Plaza junction.

The proposal comes as connectivity in the Mayur Vihar–Noida corridor continues to evolve.

The ongoing Barapullah Phase III corridor project is also aimed at improving connectivity between Mayur Vihar and Sarai Kale Khan.

Together, such infrastructure projects are intended to improve traffic movement across east Delhi and strengthen links between the city, the DND corridor and neighbouring areas.

For now, however, the Crown Plaza underpass remains a proposal under examination, with its feasibility, alignment and infrastructure impact still being assessed before any decision on construction is taken.
