European Council President Rejects US ‘Interference’ in European Politics.
European Council President Antonio Costa on Monday firmly rejected any attempt by the United States to interfere in Europe’s political affairs, following the release of Washington’s new National Security Strategy, which sharply criticized European policies.
“What we cannot accept is the threat to interfere in European politics,” Costa said at a conference in Brussels.
The strategy, released last week, portrayed Europe as over-regulated, overly censorious, and lacking in “self-confidence,” warning of potential “civilizational erasure” due to immigration. It signaled that the US under President Donald Trump would actively support political movements in Europe aligned with far-right agendas, aiming to influence domestic politics.
“The United States cannot replace European citizens in choosing which parties are good or bad,” Costa said. “The United States cannot replace Europe in defining its vision of freedom of expression.”
Costa highlighted long-standing differences with the Trump administration on issues such as climate change, but said the new strategy “goes beyond that.” He stressed that while the US remains an important ally and economic partner, Europe must maintain its sovereignty.
He also expressed concern that Russia had welcomed the US strategy as largely consistent with its own interests. On Ukraine, Costa said the strategy did not promote the “just and durable” peace Europe has long sought, focusing instead on ending confrontations and maintaining stable relations with Russia.
