Faithcation Trend: 5 South India Temple Routes for a Weekend of Spirituality, Food and Culture

Pilgrimage in India is no longer limited to annual family trips or festival seasons. A growing number of travellers are embracing “faithcations”—short, weekend-friendly spiritual getaways that combine temple visits with local cuisine, cultural experiences and a refreshing break from everyday life.

According to Sudhakar Chirra, Founder and CEO of Fresh Bus, travel patterns are shifting noticeably. “We’re seeing a significant behavioural change. More people are opting for short spiritual trips throughout the year instead of waiting for annual pilgrimages,” he said.

These trips are typically planned over weekends, making them easier to fit into busy schedules while offering a blend of devotion, sightseeing and regional food.

1. Bengaluru to Tirupati

One of the most popular faithcation routes, this journey offers an early morning visit to the Tirumala Temple, followed by the peaceful Sri Kapileswara Swamy Temple and a walk through the historic Chandragiri Fort.

Don’t miss: Tirupati Laddu, Pulihora (tamarind rice), Andhra-style vegetarian meals and freshly brewed South Indian filter coffee.

2. Hyderabad to Vijayawada

This route combines spirituality with riverside leisure. Visit the Kanaka Durga Temple, enjoy sunset views from Prakasam Barrage and unwind at Bhavani Island on the Krishna River.

Local flavours to try: Gongura Pachadi, Mirchi Bajji, Pesarattu and authentic Andhra thalis.

3. Chennai to Tirupati

Ideal for a weekend road trip, this route includes the Tiruttani Murugan Temple, Sri Padmavathi Ammavari Temple, Chandragiri Fort and Tirupati’s vibrant local markets.

Food highlights: Tirupati Laddu, Sweet Pongal, traditional Tamil tiffin and Andhra vegetarian feasts.

4. Hyderabad to Srisailam

A favourite among nature and spirituality enthusiasts, the route features the Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple, scenic viewpoints at Srisailam Dam, the Pathala Ganga ropeway and drives through the Nallamala Tiger Reserve.

What to eat: Traditional Andhra meals, regional sweets and temple-style prasadam.

5. Bengaluru to Tiruvannamalai

Known for its spiritual atmosphere, this route includes the Arunachaleswarar Temple, the sacred Girivalam trail around Arunachala Hill, Ramana Maharshi Ashram and picturesque sunset views.

Must-try dishes: Temple prasadam, authentic Tamil vegetarian meals, filter coffee and classic South Indian snacks.

Faithcations are becoming a lifestyle choice

The trend reflects a broader shift in how Indians are approaching spiritual travel. Instead of treating pilgrimages as once-a-year events, many travellers are making them regular weekend escapes.

Fresh Bus’ booking data underscores this change. Analysing bookings made between April 2024 and May 2026 across a user base of more than six lakh passengers, the company recorded a 40% increase in first-time travellers on Tirupati-linked routes. New customers rose from 58,079 in 2024 to 81,576 in 2025, indicating growing interest in spiritual tourism.

The company also found that repeat visits are increasing, suggesting temple trips are becoming part of regular travel habits rather than occasional religious obligations. Most bookings are made between Friday and Sunday, reinforcing the popularity of weekend faithcations.

“As connectivity improves and travel becomes more accessible, temples are increasingly becoming year-round destinations rather than places visited only on special occasions. We believe this trend will continue to shape the future of spiritual tourism in India,” Chirra said.
