National-Level Tennis Player Radhika Yadav Shot Dead by Father Over ‘Villagers’ Taunts’, Says FIR

A 25-year-old national-level tennis player, Radhika Yadav, was allegedly shot dead by her father, Deepak Yadav, at their residence in Gurugram’s Sector 57 on Thursday morning. The incident, which has sent shockwaves through the local sports and residential community, reportedly stemmed from a long-standing dispute and social pressure over Deepak’s perceived dependence on his daughter’s income.

According to the FIR lodged by Radhika’s uncle, Kuldeep Yadav, Deepak had expressed resentment over taunts from villagers suggesting he was living off his daughter’s earnings. He was also allegedly troubled by remarks questioning Radhika’s character.

Father Allegedly Fired Three Shots
The shooting occurred around 10:30 am while Radhika was in the kitchen preparing a meal. Police said Deepak used his licensed .32 bore revolver to fire three bullets, fatally injuring her. Her uncle and cousin, who lived on the ground floor, rushed her to Asia Maringo Hospital, where doctors declared her dead on arrival.

Deepak, during on-the-spot interrogation, confessed to the crime, stating that he had repeatedly asked Radhika to shut down her tennis academy—requests she had refused. He claimed that mounting social pressure and emotional distress led him to commit the act.

Victim Was a Former Tennis Champion
Radhika had once played tennis at the national level and won several accolades. After a shoulder injury ended her competitive career, she turned to coaching, running a tennis academy for children.

Her mother, Manju Yadav, who was unwell and resting in her room at the time of the shooting, told police she was unaware of any serious dispute between her husband and daughter. She said Radhika had always upheld the family’s honour and denied any allegations against her character.

Family in Shock; Crime Scene Investigated
Kuldeep Yadav, who filed the police complaint, stated he had no prior indication that Deepak would take such a drastic step. He confirmed that the murder weapon belonged to Deepak and had been known to the family. The revolver, along with five spent shells and one live cartridge, was found on the drawing room table.

Forensic experts were called to the scene to collect fingerprint evidence, blood samples, and other forensic material. The police have registered a case under section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Arms Act.

Investigation Ongoing
Police say Deepak Yadav remains in custody and further investigation is underway. The tragic incident has triggered renewed debate over patriarchal attitudes, mental health, and the stigma faced by financially independent women in parts of Indian society.
