All-Indian Final Heads to Tiebreaks as Humpy and Divya Draw Again in Women’s World Cup.

The 2025 FIDE Women’s World Cup will be decided via tiebreakers after both classical games in the all-Indian final between Grandmaster Koneru Humpy and International Master Divya Deshmukh ended in draws. The second game of the final, held on Sunday in Batumi, Georgia, saw another balanced contest, ensuring the battle for the title goes into rapid formats on Monday, July 28.

In a tense Game 2, Divya held her ground with the black pieces, managing to neutralise Humpy’s initiative despite an early optical advantage for the veteran. While Humpy looked to press with a pair of bishops, Divya’s knight manoeuvres and solid endgame technique ensured a draw in 34 moves.
Tiebreak Format Explained

The winner will now be decided through a series of tiebreak games under faster time controls:

  • Two rapid games of 15 minutes + 10-second increment.
  • If still tied, two more games of 10 minutes + 10-second increment.
  • If needed, two blitz games of 5 minutes + 3-second increment.
  • If the deadlock continues, an Armageddon-style final game (3 minutes + 2-second increment) will determine the champion.

History Made, Title Awaits

Regardless of the result, India is guaranteed its first-ever Women’s World Cup champion, marking a historic moment as two Indian players face off in the final for the first time in the event’s history.

The match has drawn significant attention not just for its all-Indian narrative, but also for the contrasting styles — the experienced and positional play of Humpy versus the youthful resilience and boldness of Divya.

The chess world now turns to Monday’s tiebreaks to witness who will script history as India’s first Women’s World Cup winner.
