Suspected Hijacking of Small Plane Triggers Alert at Vancouver Airport, One Arrested.
Flight operations at Vancouver International Airport were briefly suspended on Wednesday following a suspected hijacking of a small aircraft, prompting heightened security measures and flight diversions.
According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), the incident began when a Cessna 172, operated by a flying club in Victoria, was reported “hijacked” from Vancouver Island. Authorities tracked the aircraft as it approached Vancouver’s airspace, leading to a temporary halt in flight operations and the diversion of at least nine incoming flights.
The RCMP confirmed that the suspect—who was the sole occupant of the aircraft—landed the plane at around 2:15 am IST (8:45 pm GMT). Police were ready on the ground and arrested the individual without resistance shortly after the landing.
Airport operations resumed within 39 minutes, though minor delays in departures and arrivals were reported. Officials said there was no indication of broader threats or accomplices, and an investigation is underway to determine the motive behind the incident.
The situation has raised concerns over security at smaller airfields and flight clubs, with authorities reviewing existing protocols to prevent similar breaches in the future.
