The Indian men’s cricket team is set to begin their 2026–27 white-ball season with a three-match ODI series against Afghanistan, following the conclusion of a one-off Test between the two sides.
The tour marks Afghanistan’s historic multi-format visit to India, featuring a Test match followed by a bilateral ODI series. India had already taken a strong start to the tour by winning the one-off Test in Mullanpur (June 6–10) comprehensively. Attention now shifts to the 50-over format, where both teams will look to build momentum ahead of a packed international calendar.
Historic ODI series and key context
This will be the first-ever bilateral ODI series between India and Afghanistan, underlining Afghanistan’s growing presence in international cricket. The visitors are led by Hashmatullah Shahidi, who continues to guide a balanced side featuring experienced campaigners and rising talent.
A major boost for Afghanistan is the return of Rashid Khan to the ODI setup after being rested for the Test. He arrives in strong form after a standout IPL season with Gujarat Titans, where he took 21 wickets, and is expected to be central to Afghanistan’s bowling plans.
Alongside him, players such as Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Ibrahim Zadran, Rahmat Shah, Mohammad Nabi and Azmatullah Omarzai provide depth across departments, giving Afghanistan a competitive core in subcontinental conditions.
India’s squad and injury concerns
India will be led by Shubman Gill, with a squad that blends senior experience and emerging talent.
However, the hosts are missing several key players. Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel and Jasprit Bumrah are all unavailable for the series. Meanwhile, Hardik Pandya is likely to miss the ODI leg due to a leg strain.
There is also uncertainty around availability and rotation, with India expected to use the series to test combinations early in the season. Despite absences, the squad still includes experienced names such as Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant and Mohammed Siraj, alongside young talents like Yashasvi Jaiswal.
