Fadnavis’ Witty Invite to Uddhav Sparks Laughter in Maharashtra Council.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis delivered a political zinger in the Legislative Council on Wednesday, offering former CM Uddhav Thackeray a spot on the ruling side — a tongue-in-cheek remark that drew laughter across the House but a muted response from the Shiv Sena (UBT) chief.
The comment came during the farewell speech for Leader of Opposition Ambadas Danve, a key member of Thackeray’s Shiv Sena faction. With Thackeray seated in the House, Fadnavis turned to him and quipped:
“Look Uddhav-ji, there’s no chance of us sitting in the opposition till 2029. But if you want to cross over to this side, you’re welcome — it depends on you, and can be considered.” While the remark left NDA members chuckling, Thackeray brushed it aside outside the chamber, telling reporters:
“Let it go. Some things should be taken in a lighter vein.”
Adding to the moment’s significance, a video surfaced showing Fadnavis and Thackeray exchanging handshakes and smiles before the session — a rare public show of civility between the two former allies, now adversaries.
Fadnavis further teased Danve during his speech, saying:
“Ambadas Danve may be anywhere — in the party or the opposition — but his real thoughts are right-wing.”
The lighthearted exchange comes in the backdrop of the National Democratic Alliance’s resounding victory in the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly elections. With the BJP, the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, and the Ajit Pawar faction of the NCP firmly in control, the prospect of Fadnavis returning to the opposition bench anytime soon appears slim.
