Mahavatar Narsimha, directed by Ashwin Kumar and produced by Kleem Productions in association with Hombale Films, has officially entered the eligibility list for the 98th Academy Awards.
After its successful theatrical run in India, the animated feature will now vie for a spot in the Best Animated Feature category at the 2026 Oscars, competing against global titles such as KPop Demon Hunters, Zootopia 2, and Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Infinity Castle.
Meets Key Academy Requirements
As per the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, animated features must run over 40 minutes, contain at least 75% animation, and complete a qualifying seven-day theatrical release in one of six major U.S. cities. With these conditions fulfilled, Mahavatar Narsimha qualifies not only for Best Animated Feature but also for Best International Feature, following recent rule changes that allow dual submissions.
The Academy’s eligibility list for the 98th Oscars includes a wide spectrum of animated projects such as Arco, The Bad Guys 2, Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc, Dog of God, Elio, Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie, Light of the World, and The Twits.
A Growing Indian Animated Universe
Mahavatar Narsimha is the first film in an ambitious multi-title franchise planned over the next decade. Upcoming instalments include Mahavatar Parshuram (2027), Mahavatar Raghunandan (2029), Mahavatar Dwarkadhish (2031), Mahavatar Gokulananda (2033), and a two-part Mahavatar Kalki slated for 2035 and 2037.
Speaking earlier about the vision for the series, director Ashwin Kumar said the franchise aims to create a homegrown counterpart to large-scale Hollywood superhero universes. “We’re achieving milestones for Indian audiences and the diaspora. While our budgets may not match global studios yet, the Indian spirit of jugaad helps us innovate. By the seventh film, we’ll be where we want to be,” he said.
