Audio Clip Allegedly of Mamata Banerjee’s Call to Hospital CEO Sparks Political Controversy
A purported audio recording of Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee allegedly confronting the CEO of a leading Kolkata hospital has triggered a fresh political controversy in West Bengal. The clip surfaced a day after her nephew and TMC national general secretary, Abhishek Banerjee, was attacked by a mob during a visit to South 24 Parganas district and later admitted to a private hospital.
In the audio, allegedly featuring Mamata Banerjee and Belle Vue Hospital CEO Pradip Tandon, the former chief minister can be heard accusing the hospital administration of wrongdoing and warning of consequences.
“Sorry Mr Tandon, you have done a wrong thing,” a voice purported to be Mamata’s says in the recording.
The speaker goes on to accuse the hospital chief of misleading people and allegedly remarks that political equations could change in the future.
Neither Mamata Banerjee nor Belle Vue Hospital has publicly confirmed the authenticity of the viral audio clip.
Attack on Abhishek Banerjee
The controversy comes in the backdrop of an attack on Abhishek Banerjee in Sonarpur, where he had travelled to meet families allegedly affected by post-poll violence.
Videos from the scene showed a large crowd hurling eggs and stones while raising slogans against the TMC leader. Security personnel and party workers formed a protective ring around Abhishek and escorted him away from the area as tensions escalated.
Visuals also showed him wearing a protective helmet and appearing visibly shaken during the confrontation. His shirt was reportedly torn in the melee.
Following the incident, Abhishek accused BJP workers of orchestrating the attack.
“It’s all BJP-sponsored. Look what they have done. This is their example of democracy,” he told reporters after the incident.
The Diamond Harbour MP further alleged that the attackers intended to cause him serious harm.
Hospitalisation and Medical Concerns
After the attack, Abhishek was initially taken to Apollo Hospital in Kolkata before being shifted to Belle Vue Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.
Mamata Banerjee later claimed that her nephew had suffered injuries that resulted in blood clots and required extensive medical examinations, including imaging scans and specialist assessments.
Addressing a press conference, she alleged that BJP leaders and a senior police officer had pressured the hospital to discharge Abhishek despite his medical condition.
According to Mamata, the TMC leader was admitted to the Intensive Therapy Unit (ITU), and doctors carried out multiple tests before deciding on further treatment.
She questioned why Abhishek would have been placed under intensive care if his injuries were not serious.
The BJP has rejected the allegations levelled by the TMC, setting the stage for another political confrontation between the two parties in West Bengal.
With the authenticity of the viral audio yet to be independently verified, the episode has added a fresh layer of controversy to an already charged political battle following the attack on Abhishek Banerjee.
