Mohsin Naqvi refuses to hand over Asia Cup trophy, asks India captain to collect it personally.
Dubai: Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Mohsin Naqvi, who also chairs the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), has refused to hand over the Asia Cup 2025 trophy to India. Pakistani media reported on Tuesday, September 30, that Naqvi directed India captain Suryakumar Yadav to collect the trophy in person from the ACC office.
The incident unfolded during the Asia Cup final on Sunday, where chaos ensued as the Indian team, who had defeated Pakistan, waited for over an hour on stage while ACC officials reportedly took the trophy and medals away. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had requested that the Emirates Cricket Board vice-chairman present the trophy instead, citing geopolitical tensions, but Naqvi denied the request.
Following the match, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia condemned Naqvi’s actions, calling them “unsportsmanlike” and stating that India expects the trophy and medals to be returned promptly.
Two days after the final, during a routine ACC meeting in Dubai, BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla pressed Naqvi for the trophy handover. Naqvi insisted that the matter was not on the agenda and reiterated that India’s captain must visit the ACC office personally to claim the trophy. Pakistani media reported that no final decision was made regarding the handover.
BCCI officials attending virtually reportedly reacted sharply to Naqvi’s stance, demanding that the trophy be transferred to ICC headquarters instead.
