“MS Dhoni Still a Key Figure for CSK Despite Possible 2026 Absence: Fleming”

Even though MS Dhoni did not play a single match in IPL 2026, Chennai Super Kings head coach Stephen Fleming insisted.

That the veteran’s presence remained crucial for the franchise during a season of transition. Speaking after CSK’s final home game at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Monday, Fleming said Dhoni continued to influence the dressing room despite staying away from on-field duties throughout the campaign.

“MS has been around a lot this year, which has been really important for the team, especially for the younger players and for continuity,” Fleming said in the post-match press conference.

“He hasn’t played, but he has still had a huge influence on the side.”

Dhoni’s absence from the playing XI throughout the season sparked widespread discussion among fans, especially with speculation growing around whether the former India captain had already played his final IPL game. However, Fleming defended the management’s decision and highlighted the broader value Dhoni brought to the setup.

“We have introduced some young players who could become long-term assets for CSK. But in professional sport, results matter and we understand that scrutiny,” Fleming added.

Clarifying whether Dhoni was ever considered for selection this season, Fleming said the 44-year-old had taken on a different role within the squad.

“There has been a lot of change in the team, and this year he was around throughout the season. Last year he wasn’t around much, so it would be unfair to compare,” he said.

Meanwhile, former CSK batter Suresh Raina revealed that he has already urged Dhoni to return for IPL 2027.

After CSK’s traditional lap of honour at Chepauk, Raina said he jokingly told Dhoni that IPL 2026 should be treated as a “missed call” and not a farewell season.

“He said the body is not the same anymore, but I told him fans still want to see him play,” Raina said.

Raina added that Dhoni’s response — “Let me see” — still leaves room for hope among CSK supporters.

CSK’s playoff hopes, meanwhile, remain slim after their defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad. The five-time champions are currently sixth on the table with 12 points from 13 matches and must beat Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad on May 21 while also depending on other results to stay alive in the playoff race.
