MS Dhoni’s Suggestion Paves Way for Zaheer Khan’s Appointment as CSK Head Coach

MS Dhoni’s preference for a familiar figure in the Chennai Super Kings setup reportedly played a key role in the franchise’s decision to appoint former India pacer Zaheer Khan as its new head coach.

The five-time IPL champions announced Zaheer’s appointment on Monday, bringing an end to Stephen Fleming’s long tenure. Fleming had been in charge of CSK for 18 seasons and played a major role in establishing the franchise as one of the most successful teams in IPL history.

“Welcoming Zaheer Khan as the Head Coach of Chennai Super Kings,” the franchise posted on X.

Zaheer also expressed his excitement about joining the team, describing CSK as one of the IPL’s most successful franchises.

The former India fast bowler played 92 Tests, 200 ODIs and 17 T20Is for the national team. He was also an important member of Dhoni’s India setup and finished as the leading wicket-taker at the 2011 ODI World Cup, claiming 21 wickets as India lifted the trophy.

Zaheer Khan’s Coaching Experience

Zaheer has previously held several coaching and mentoring positions in the IPL. He worked with Lucknow Super Giants as a mentor during the 2024 season. Before that, he served Mumbai Indians as director of cricket operations and later as global head of cricket development.

During his playing career, Zaheer featured in 100 IPL matches, representing Mumbai Indians, Delhi Daredevils and Royal Challengers Bengaluru before moving into coaching and mentoring roles after retirement.

CSK CEO and managing director Kashi Viswanathan praised Zaheer’s experience and understanding of the game, particularly his work with young fast bowlers.

CSK owner Rupa Gurunath also highlighted Zaheer’s playing record and his ability to develop emerging talent, saying the franchise expects his experience to strengthen the team’s core.

Why CSK Chose an Indian Coach

Fleming announced in July that he would leave CSK after a hugely successful stint with the franchise. He has since taken up the role of England men’s Test head coach.

According to sources familiar with CSK’s management, the franchise’s cricket leadership group, which includes MS Dhoni, captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and Rupa Gurunath, was keen to appoint an Indian coach this time.

Dhoni’s preference for working with someone familiar with the team’s setup reportedly further strengthened Zaheer’s candidature.

Several other names had emerged during speculation over Fleming’s successor. However, former England captain Eoin Morgan was reportedly never a serious contender for the position.

Former India cricketer Hemang Badani, meanwhile, was also considered. His recent coaching stint with Delhi Capitals reportedly worked against him after the franchise struggled during the two seasons under his leadership.

Badani has enjoyed success in competitions such as the ILT20 and The Hundred, but CSK’s management ultimately opted for Zaheer’s broader experience and familiarity with Indian cricket.
