Musk Sues Apple, OpenAI Over Alleged Monopoly in iPhone AI Integration

Elon Musk has filed a lawsuit against Apple Inc. and OpenAI, accusing them of unfairly favoring ChatGPT on iPhones and blocking competition from rival chatbot developers.

The case, lodged on Monday in federal court in Fort Worth, Texas, was brought by Musk’s X and xAI Holdings. The complaint argues that Apple’s decision to embed OpenAI technology directly into the iPhone’s operating system limits consumer choice and sidelines other AI players.

Musk claims Apple’s arrangement effectively makes ChatGPT the default AI assistant on iPhones and ensures it remains at the top of App Store rankings, a crucial visibility advantage for app developers.

High-Stakes Battle

The lawsuit pits the world’s richest person against one of the world’s most valuable companies, with potential ramifications for the fast-growing AI market.

Apple and OpenAI’s “exclusive arrangement” has created a monopoly, Musk’s lawyers argue, shutting out new entrants like Musk’s Grok AI. Apple and OpenAI have not yet responded to requests for comment.

Backdrop of Feuds and Legal Scrutiny

Musk co-founded OpenAI with Sam Altman before a split over strategy, and he has since repeatedly criticized the company’s direction. Their rivalry has escalated as Musk pushes his own AI venture, xAI, integrated with the X social network.

Apple, meanwhile, has faced global regulatory pressure and a five-year legal battle with Epic Games over its App Store dominance. Musk’s lawsuit adds fresh scrutiny, claiming Apple’s practices are anti-competitive and harmful to innovation.

The filing comes after Musk posted on X earlier this month, questioning whether Apple was “playing politics” by excluding his products from prime visibility. Apple replied that its App Store is “fair and free of bias.” Altman fired back, suggesting Musk himself manipulates X to suit his own interests.
