NASA Launches $4 Billion Telescope Into Space To Unlock Mysteries Of The Universe

NASA’s new flagship space telescope has been launched from Florida on a mission to investigate some of the universe’s biggest unanswered questions, from dark energy and dark matter to the search for distant planets.

The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, a project costing about $4 billion, lifted off from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center on Sunday aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket.

Despite some concerns over weather conditions before launch, the rocket successfully carried the observatory into space under mostly clear skies.

Roman will travel towards Lagrange Point 2, an orbital region about 1.6 million kilometres from Earth. NASA has designed the mission to last at least five years, although the telescope could potentially operate for another five years depending on its fuel supply.

The observatory is expected to complement the work of the James Webb Space Telescope and Hubble Space Telescope rather than replace them. Webb, launched in 2021, is built to capture extremely deep and detailed views of distant objects, while Roman is designed to survey enormous areas of the sky.

NASA’s Science Mission Directorate chief Nicola Fox compared the difference to looking through a keyhole versus opening a door to the universe.

Roman’s senior project scientist Julie McEnery said the telescope would have sensitivity and image sharpness comparable to Hubble while surveying the sky at a much faster rate.

“One month of observations to survey our Milky Way galaxy would take about a century with Hubble,” McEnery said.

Roman To Create Vast Cosmic Map

One of Roman’s central goals is to better understand dark matter and dark energy, two of the universe’s least understood components.

The telescope will create an extensive three-dimensional map of the cosmos, with its primary survey expected to examine more than two billion galaxies over more than a year.

Scientists estimate that ordinary matter — including stars, planets, gas and dust — makes up only around 5% of the universe. Dark matter accounts for roughly 27%, while dark energy is thought to comprise about 68%.

Dark matter is inferred from its gravitational influence on galaxies and other cosmic structures, while dark energy is the name given to the mysterious phenomenon believed to be driving the accelerating expansion of the universe.

By measuring how dark matter affects the distribution of galaxies and how dark energy influences cosmic expansion, scientists hope Roman will provide new clues about both phenomena.

Telescope To Hunt Thousands Of Exoplanets

Roman will also undertake one of the most extensive searches for exoplanets ever conducted.

NASA expects the observatory to identify thousands of planets beyond our solar system and provide a broad statistical picture of planetary systems, including those that could resemble our own.

Cosmologist Mustapha Ishak of the University of Texas at Dallas said Roman’s ability to make unexpected discoveries could prove particularly valuable.

He noted that major astronomical observatories have historically produced some of their most significant findings in areas scientists had not anticipated before launch.

Roman To Work Alongside Webb And Hubble

The new telescope is designed to complement rather than duplicate the capabilities of Webb and Hubble.

NASA compares Roman to a camera’s wide-angle lens, allowing it to capture panoramic views across large portions of the sky. Webb, by contrast, functions more like a zoom lens, allowing scientists to examine distant cosmic objects in exceptional detail.

Roman’s wide field of view will enable astronomers to identify large-scale patterns and unusual objects that can then be studied in greater depth by other observatories.

Launch Comes Ahead Of Schedule

The Roman mission faced funding challenges during both of Donald Trump’s presidential terms, with his administration seeking to reduce or eliminate its funding. Congress ultimately preserved the programme.

NASA said the launch took place about nine months earlier than originally planned, marking a significant milestone for the roughly $4 billion observatory.

With its broad survey capabilities, Roman is expected to provide astronomers with a new perspective on the universe and potentially uncover discoveries that reshape current understanding of how the cosmos evolved.
