Neeraj Chopra’s South Africa Training Extended as Sports Ministry Sanctions Full Support
The Sports Ministry’s Mission Olympic Cell (MOC) has approved an extension of javelin star Neeraj Chopra’s pre-season training in South Africa until April, providing full financial backing for his preparation ahead of the 2026 competitive season.
In its 168th meeting on Wednesday, the MOC sanctioned the extended camp, ensuring Chopra has sufficient time and resources to focus on technical adjustments and fitness recovery following a challenging 2025 season.
Coaching Revamp and Strategic Focus
The two-time Olympic medallist began his pre-season camp in Potchefstroom in January, originally approved for 32 days. He will now continue training in Pretoria before kicking off the competitive season at the Doha Diamond League in May.
The extension also reflects a shift in Chopra’s coaching setup. He recently parted ways with Czech javelin legend Jan Zelezny and reunited with Jai Chaudhary, the coach who guided him during his formative years in Panipat. Chaudhary will oversee the pre-season block, focusing on technical fine-tuning and conditioning.
Chopra’s preparation is complemented by his longtime physiotherapist Ishaan Marwaha, reinforcing a holistic approach to training and recovery.
World-Class Facilities and Complete Backing
The Potchefstroom training centre is globally renowned for elite javelin preparation, offering advanced infrastructure and a specialized environment for throwers.
The MOC’s financial support covers all major expenses, including training, gym and track access, local logistics, transfers, and daily allowances, allowing Chopra to focus entirely on physical conditioning and skill refinement.
Bouncing Back After a Tough Season
Chopra battled an adductor injury throughout 2025. While he achieved a career highlight by crossing the 90-metre mark at the Doha Diamond League, his eighth-place finish at the World Championships in Tokyo was disappointing. He took a strategic break to address lingering fitness issues and is now targeting a strong return at the Doha Diamond League in May 2026.
The extended South Africa stint is seen as a crucial step in ensuring Chopra enters the new season in peak form, ready to contend at the highest level.
