Neurosurgeon warns of overstimulated brains, reveals how just 2 minutes of silence can reset your mind
Modern life keeps us constantly surrounded by stimuli. From endless breaking news to ads at every turn, there’s always something demanding attention.
Add to that the dopamine-driven pull of platforms like Instagram, and being online has, for many, become a habit that borders on addiction.
But the human brain isn’t designed to operate this way. It needs regular pauses to rest and recharge in order to function at its best. In a post shared on April 12, Dr Prashant Katakol, a neurosurgeon with over three decades of experience, highlighted the impact of constant stimulation — and the surprising benefits of simply sitting in silence.
What constant stimulation does to the brain
According to Dr Katakol, most people rarely experience true silence anymore. Screens, music, and background noise fill nearly every moment of the day.
“Most of us wake up and immediately reach for our phones. We eat with the TV on. We work with music in the background. We sleep with podcasts playing. At no point does the brain get a moment to simply stop,” he explained.
This nonstop engagement, he warned, keeps stress hormones elevated and gradually wears down neural circuits. The prefrontal cortex — responsible for focus, decision-making, and clear thinking — doesn’t get the recovery time it needs.
Why silence matters
“In a world that never stops talking, silence has become the rarest gift you can give your brain,” he said. Even a brief pause can make a difference.
“Just two minutes of silence allows your brain to shift from ‘doing mode’ to ‘being mode’,” Dr Katakol noted. This activates the default mode network, which plays a key role in self-reflection, creativity, and emotional processing.
Rather than being unproductive, these quiet moments help restore mental balance. Sitting in silence — without a phone, conversation, or distractions — allows the mind to regain clarity and calm in a way that external stimulation cannot replicate.
Benefits of just two minutes of silence daily
- Reduced stress
- Improved mental clarity
- Greater inner calm
In a hyper-connected world, even a couple of minutes of stillness can act as a powerful reset for the brain.
