Pakistan Opposition Announces Nationwide Protests, Demands Balochistan Government’s Ouster

Pakistan’s newly formed opposition alliance, Tehreek-e-Tahafuz Ayeen-e-Pakistan (TTAP), has announced a nationwide protest campaign beginning August 5, stepping up pressure on the country’s political and military establishment. The alliance is demanding the resignation of the Balochistan government, the postponement of elections in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), and the release of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan.

The protests will coincide with the third anniversary of Imran Khan’s conviction and imprisonment in Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail. The alliance, led by Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and other opposition parties, has also called for a joint session of Parliament to discuss the security situation in Balochistan and PoK.

Opposition Raises Security Concerns

The announcement followed a meeting of the opposition alliance chaired by Mahmood Khan Achakzai, TTAP president and Leader of the Opposition in Pakistan’s National Assembly.

Addressing a press conference, Achakzai accused the government of failing to tackle worsening law and order in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, while also criticising the handling of recent unrest in PoK.

He argued that the current administration lacked the political legitimacy to resolve the country’s security challenges and called for the immediate resignation of the Balochistan provincial government.

Calls for Imran Khan’s Release

The alliance also demanded the release of Imran Khan, his wife Bushra Bibi, and other political detainees, alleging that their continued imprisonment violated constitutional and democratic principles.

In addition, TTAP urged authorities to postpone the upcoming elections in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, arguing that the prevailing political and security situation was not conducive to holding free and fair polls.

Questions Over Security Failures

Achakzai also criticised the government’s response to the recent militant attack on a security checkpoint in Balochistan’s Ziarat district, where 17 police personnel were killed. He alleged that security forces remained poorly equipped to deal with the deteriorating situation and questioned the lack of accountability following the attack.

Opposition Intensifies Pressure

According to sources cited by CNN-News18, Pakistan’s military establishment is simultaneously dealing with multiple internal challenges, including militant violence in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the insurgency in Balochistan, and mounting political opposition.

The report said opposition parties are increasingly using security setbacks to question the government’s performance, while also seeking parliamentary scrutiny of the country’s security strategy.

The planned protests are expected to further intensify political tensions in Pakistan, where opposition parties continue to press for institutional reforms, the release of political prisoners and greater accountability over the country’s worsening security situation.
