PM Modi Meets Lone Survivor of Ahmedabad Air India Crash, Reviews Relief Measures.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday met Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, the sole survivor of the devastating Air India plane crash that took place in Ahmedabad on Thursday, claiming the lives of at least 260 people.
Vishwash, a British national of Indian origin, was onboard Air India flight AI-171, which tragically crashed just 33 seconds after takeoff from Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport en route to London Gatwick. He is currently receiving treatment at Ahmedabad Civil Hospital, where PM Modi met him in Ward C7, where several other injured persons are also being treated.
During his hospital visit, the Prime Minister spoke with the attending doctors and medical staff, inquiring about the survivor’s condition and the overall treatment being provided to the injured.
A Miracle Amid Wreckage
According to police officials, Vishwash was seated near the emergency exit on seat 11A. He is believed to have escaped through that exit, although it remains unclear whether he jumped out before or after impact.
Recalling the horror from his hospital bed, the 40-year-old said:
“When I got up, there were bodies all around me. I was scared. I stood up and ran. There were pieces of the plane everywhere. Someone grabbed me, put me in an ambulance, and brought me here.”
Vishwash was travelling to the UK with his brother after visiting relatives in India.
PM Modi Visits Crash Site
Earlier in the day, the Prime Minister also visited the crash site near a medical college hostel in Meghani Nagar, where the Boeing 787 Dreamliner crashed, leading to mass casualties. He reviewed the situation with senior officials, including Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu, Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi, and local emergency responders.
Fatal Toll and Investigation
The crash has so far claimed 260 lives, including 169 Indian nationals, 53 British citizens, 7 Portuguese nationals, and 1 Canadian. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has launched a formal probe into the crash.
Officials confirmed that all 241 people on board—comprising 230 passengers and 11 crew members—perished, except Vishwash. Several students in the medical college hostel were also killed, adding to the tragedy’s human cost.
Authorities are yet to determine the exact cause of the crash, and investigators say all possibilities, including technical failure and operational error, are being examined.
