PM Modi Inaugurates Kartavya Bhavan, First of 10 Central Secretariat Buildings Under Central Vista Plan.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday inaugurated Kartavya Bhavan, the first of 10 planned Common Central Secretariat buildings, as part of the ambitious Central Vista redevelopment project aimed at modernising the administrative heart of the Indian government.

New Nerve Centre for Key Ministries
Kartavya Bhavan will house major ministries including Home Affairs, External Affairs, Rural Development, MSME, and Petroleum and Natural Gas. The Principal Scientific Adviser’s Office and the Department of Personnel and Training will also operate from the newly constructed facility.

Timeline for the Remaining Buildings
According to government officials, two additional buildings are expected to be completed by next month, another by April 2026, and two more by October 2026. All 10 are targeted to be operational within the next two years.

Executive Enclave and PMO in the Next Phase
The broader Central Vista plan also includes an upcoming Executive Enclave, which will house the Prime Minister’s Office, Cabinet Secretariat, India House, and the National Security Council Secretariat. A new official residence for the Prime Minister is also planned in the project’s second phase.

Out With the Old: Shifting From Legacy Buildings
Several key ministries currently function out of decades-old buildings like Shastri Bhawan, Krishi Bhawan, Udyog Bhawan, and Nirman Bhawan—all built between the 1950s and 1970s. These are considered outdated and will eventually be vacated.
For now, ministries will be temporarily relocated to spaces on Kasturba Gandhi Marg, Minto Road, and Netaji Palace for about two years.

Structures to Be Retained
Some heritage and strategic buildings will remain intact, including the National Museum, National Archives, Jawaharlal Nehru Bhawan, Dr Ambedkar Auditorium, and Vanijya Bhawan.
