Putin and Netanyahu Discuss Gaza Truce, Iran Nuclear Programme in Latest Call.
Russian President Vladimir Putin and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held a telephone conversation on Saturday to discuss developments in West Asia, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
According to a ministry statement, the leaders exchanged views on the Gaza ceasefire, the ongoing exchange of detainees, Iran’s nuclear programme, and efforts to stabilise Syria. This was their first conversation since October, when they discussed the US-proposed Gaza Peace Plan.
The call comes just two days after the United States Mission to the United Nations urged the UN Security Council (UNSC) to back a draft resolution based on former President Donald Trump’s 20-point plan. The proposal includes the creation of an international “Board of Peace” and a stabilisation force to oversee Gaza, as well as measures for staged Israeli withdrawal, hostages’ release, demilitarisation, and long-term reconstruction.
While Israel has publicly approved the plan, Hamas has not fully accepted its terms. Reports indicate that some UNSC members, including China and Russia, as well as certain Arab nations, are opposing the inclusion of the proposed “Board of Peace” in the resolution, citing concerns over governance and the exclusion of a transitional role for the Palestinian Authority.
The Times of Israel reported that Putin initiated the Saturday call, marking the latest in a series of recent discussions between the two leaders on regional issues.
