Rahul Gandhi Says ‘Will Not Back Down’ Amid Privilege Motion Row Over Farmer Remarks
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday said he would continue to fight for farmers’ rights regardless of whether an FIR is filed, a case is registered or a privilege motion is brought against him.
In a post on X, Gandhi wrote, “FIR ho, mukadma darj ho ya Privilege prastaav laayein — main kisano ke liye ladunga,” asserting that he would not be deterred by legal or parliamentary action.
He also cautioned against any trade agreement that, in his view, could undermine farmers’ livelihoods or weaken India’s food security. “Jo bhi trade deal kisano ki rozi-roti chheene ya desh ki khadya suraksha ko kamzor kare, woh kisan-virodhi hai,” he said, describing such arrangements as anti-farmer.
Gandhi accused the Narendra Modi-led government of compromising farmers’ interests and said the opposition would resist any move that harms “annadata”. He maintained that farmers’ welfare and national food security must remain non-negotiable.
His remarks came a day after Union Minister Kiren Rijiju said a notice for a privilege motion would be moved against Gandhi for allegedly “misleading” the House and making “baseless statements”.
However, sources indicated that the Centre has decided not to pursue a privilege motion at this stage, signalling a preference to address the issue through parliamentary debate rather than formal proceedings.
