India vice-captain Rishabh Pant has issued a heartfelt apology to fans after India’s 0-2 Test series defeat to South Africa.
India were thoroughly outplayed in the Guwahati Test, losing by a massive 408 runs, with Pant leading the side in the absence of regular captain Shubman Gill.
Pant endured a difficult series himself, managing just 49 runs in four innings at an average of 12.25. India’s heavy defeat in Guwahati— their biggest ever in terms of runs — triggered sharp scrutiny of Pant’s captaincy as well as his batting.
Taking to social media, the wicketkeeper-batter admitted that the team fell well short of expectations over the past two weeks and acknowledged the fans’ disappointment.
“There is no shying away from the fact that we didn’t play good enough cricket. As a team and as individuals, we always want to perform at the highest level and bring smiles to billions of Indians,” Pant wrote.
He added that the team would learn from the setback and return stronger.
“Sorry we couldn’t live up to expectations this time. Sport teaches you to learn, adapt and grow. Representing India is the greatest honour of our lives. We know what this team is capable of and we will regroup, refocus and reset to come back stronger.”
Pant also thanked fans for their continued support, signing off with “Jai Hind.”
The wicketkeeper will now shift focus to the three-match ODI series against South Africa, beginning November 30 in Ranchi, where he will look to bounce back quickly.
