RJ Balaji Clears Air on ‘Karuppu’, Says He Wanted a Superstar Like Vijay

RJ Balaji has finally addressed the speculation surrounding his upcoming film Karuppu, putting to rest rumours that the story was originally written for Vijay before being reworked for Suriya.

Since the film’s announcement, reports had suggested that the script was first pitched to Vijay and later modified when Suriya came on board. However, Balaji clarified that Karuppu was never created with any particular actor in mind. He revealed that he began developing the story in 2023 and, like most projects, it evolved significantly during its early stages.

As the narrative grew in scale, Balaji felt the film required a major star to do justice to its ambition. While Vijay briefly crossed his mind during the writing phase—especially since the actor had earlier expressed interest in collaborating—the project was not built specifically for him. Balaji recalled narrating a different idea to Vijay earlier, which the actor appreciated, but the collaboration did not materialise due to timing and other commitments.

When Balaji eventually pitched Karuppu to Suriya, the actor immediately connected with the story and agreed to take it on. The filmmaker then made minor adjustments to better suit Suriya’s screen presence, shaping the film around his strengths.

Balaji also noted that Karuppu marks a step up in scale compared to his earlier films like LKG and Mookuthi Amman. While retaining his signature blend of entertainment and relatability, he has aimed for a more expansive narrative with heightened action and a stronger mass appeal.

The film features a notable ensemble cast including Trisha Krishnan, Indrans, Natty Subramaniam, Swasika, Sshivada, Supreeth Reddy and Yogi Babu, alongside Balaji himself.

With a bigger canvas and a star-driven narrative, Karuppu is shaping up to be one of Balaji’s most ambitious projects yet.
