India’s ODI Squad vs New Zealand: Gill to Lead, Bumrah and Pandya Likely Rested.
The Indian team for the upcoming three-match ODI series against New Zealand will be selected on January 3, sources told TOI. The squad is set to assemble in Vadodara on January 7, ahead of the series opener on January 11 in Vadodara. The next two matches are scheduled in Rajkot on January 14 and Indore on January 18.
“The national selection committee, chaired by former India pacer Ajit Agarkar, will hold an online meeting on January 3 to pick the squad,” a BCCI source said.
The series is expected to draw significant attention, as it will feature stars Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in action for the first time since India’s ODI series against South Africa in December. India has already named its squad for the five-match T20I series against New Zealand, starting January 21, while New Zealand has also announced both squads.
Skipper Shubman Gill, recently dropped from India’s 2026 T20 World Cup squad but recovered from a neck injury, is set to lead the side. Vice-captain Shreyas Iyer, however, will remain unavailable as he continues rehabilitation at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence for another week.
In a bid to manage workloads ahead of upcoming tournaments, star all-rounder Hardik Pandya and pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah are likely to be rested for the ODI series. Both players have missed India’s last two ODI series, and the management is keen to protect their fitness with the T20 World Cup approaching.
Selectors will also have to decide between in-form Uttar Pradesh wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel, who scored 307 runs in three matches at an average of 153.5—including 160* off 101 balls against Baroda on December 29—or Ishan Kishan, as a potential replacement for Rishabh Pant as the second wicketkeeper.
