US Open: Sinner battles past Shapovalov; Osaka sets up Gauff clash.
Jannik Sinner survived a stern third-round test against Denis Shapovalov at the US Open on Saturday, August 30. The Italian World No. 1 needed three hours and 12 minutes to grind out a 5-7, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 win at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Sinner, far from his fluent best, dropped serve three times but broke Shapovalov on six occasions. After conceding the opening set, he hit back to level the match in the second. The turning point came in the third set, where he trailed 0-3 before reeling off six of the next seven games to seize control. From there, the top seed dictated play and sealed victory with authority, extending his unbeaten run in Grand Slam matches on hard courts to 24.
He will next face the winner of Alexander Bublik vs Tommy Paul for a place in the quarterfinals.
Osaka outlasts Kasatkina
On the women’s side, Naomi Osaka powered into the Round of 16 with a 6-0, 4-6, 6-3 win over No. 15 seed Daria Kasatkina at Louis Armstrong Stadium. The No. 23 seed dominated the opening set, conceding just eight points, before Kasatkina fought back to take the second. In the decider, Osaka rediscovered her rhythm, closing out the match to reach the fourth round of a major for the first time since her 2021 Australian Open triumph.
Next up for Osaka is defending champion Coco Gauff in one of the marquee matchups of the women’s draw. Gauff leads their head-to-head 3-2, though Osaka won their only US Open meeting back in 2019.
