Sensex Rises Over 300 Points, Nifty Crosses 23,900 as Indian Stock Market Extends Winning Streak
Indian equity markets opened in positive territory on Wednesday, November 4, extending their upward momentum for a fifth consecutive session. Lower crude oil prices, renewed buying by foreign institutional investors (FIIs) and optimism over corporate earnings supported investor sentiment.
The buying momentum was particularly visible in FMCG, banking and other heavyweight stocks, although IT shares continued to face selling pressure.
At 9:22 am, the BSE Sensex was trading 312.60 points higher, gaining 0.41% to reach 77,230.45. Meanwhile, the NSE Nifty 50 climbed 91 points, or 0.38%, to 23,901.85.
The positive opening followed a strong rally on Tuesday. The Sensex had jumped 1,225.07 points (1.62%) to close at 76,917.85, while the Nifty gained 370.05 points (1.58%) to settle at 23,810.85. Both benchmark indices had recorded gains for four consecutive trading sessions.
FMCG and Banking Stocks Drive Market Gains
Most sectoral indices traded in the green during early trading, with FMCG stocks emerging as the biggest contributors to the rally.
The Nifty FMCG index advanced 1.48%, while the Nifty Cement index gained 0.96%. The Nifty Financial Services 25/50 rose 0.67%, and the Nifty Financial Services index added 0.64%.
Other gainers included Nifty Healthcare (0.45%), Nifty Private Bank (0.43%) and Nifty Auto (0.42%).
In contrast, the Nifty IT index declined 0.57%, while the Nifty Metal index slipped 0.18%.
Among Sensex stocks, ITC emerged as the top performer with a 3.05% gain. SBI advanced 1.41%, while HDFC Bank rose 1.35%. Adani Ports, BEL and Mahindra & Mahindra also featured among the major gainers.
On the losing side, Power Grid fell 0.98%, while TCS declined 0.97%. Bharti Airtel, Eternal, HCL Technologies, Hindalco and Infosys also traded in negative territory.
India VIX Climbs Despite Positive Market Sentiment
Despite the gains in benchmark indices, the India VIX, which measures expected market volatility, increased 2.06% to 16.05. The rise suggested that investors were maintaining some caution amid global uncertainties.
Crude Oil Prices Ease in Global Markets
Crude oil prices edged lower during early trading on Wednesday as investors assessed the potential implications of the US midterm election results and their impact on geopolitical developments and Middle East peace negotiations.
Brent crude futures declined 26 cents, or 0.25%, to $103.34 per barrel. US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude fell 53 cents, or 0.55%, to $95.56 per barrel.
The decline came despite industry data indicating an unexpected fall in US crude inventories last week.
Foreign Investor Buying Boosts Market Confidence
V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Investments Ltd, said the market’s overall sentiment had undergone a significant improvement, largely due to a reversal in foreign institutional investor activity.
According to him, FIIs had turned net buyers in five of the previous six trading sessions, purchasing shares worth Rs 18,661 crore. Their renewed participation has provided considerable support to domestic equities after an extended period of sustained selling.
Vijayakumar also pointed to improving corporate earnings, attractive valuations in large-cap stocks and weakening enthusiasm around the artificial intelligence trade as factors encouraging foreign investors to return to Indian markets.
He expects large-cap stocks, particularly leading financial companies, to play a major role in sustaining the ongoing rally because of their ability to attract substantial foreign investment.
US Midterm Election Results in Focus
Investors are also closely tracking the outcome of the US midterm elections and their potential implications for global financial markets.
Vijayakumar noted that a Democratic victory in both chambers of the US Congress could significantly constrain President Donald Trump’s political influence, potentially creating uncertainty over policy decisions and the functioning of the US administration.
Such developments could affect American markets while potentially creating opportunities for emerging markets, including India.
For now, easing crude prices, improving foreign fund flows and stronger domestic earnings are providing support to the Indian stock market’s ongoing upward trend.
