Supreme Court Issues Notice to Mohammed Shami Over Alimony Dispute.

The Supreme Court of India has issued notices to Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami and the West Bengal government after his estranged wife, Hasin Jahan, approached the apex court seeking an increase in the monthly maintenance awarded to her and their daughter.

Jahan challenged a Calcutta High Court order that set her alimony at Rs 1.5 lakh per month and Rs 2.5 lakh for their daughter, arguing that the amount was insufficient given Shami’s earnings and lifestyle. She urged the court to enhance the maintenance.

During the hearing, the bench questioned, “Isn’t Rs 4 lakh per month already a lot of money?” Despite this, it sought responses from both Shami and the West Bengal government within four weeks. The matter is scheduled for further hearing in December.

Jahan’s lawyer contended that Shami’s income and assets far exceed the current maintenance order. According to the petition, he owns property worth hundreds of crores, luxury cars, frequently travels abroad, and maintains an extravagant lifestyle.

The plea also highlighted alleged defaults in payments over several months, despite directives from the family court and the Calcutta High Court. Jahan emphasized that while she does not claim a personal share of Shami’s income, their daughter deserves a lifestyle commensurate with her father’s.

The dispute between Shami and Jahan, ongoing since 2018, began after allegations of domestic abuse, dowry harassment, and financial disagreements. The case has drawn significant public attention, though Shami has largely refrained from commenting on his personal life, focusing instead on his cricket career.

Both Shami and the West Bengal government are required to submit their responses within four weeks, after which the Supreme Court will continue hearing the matter in December.
