The Supreme Court of India on Wednesday voiced “grave concern” over content in a Class 8 textbook published by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) that deals with the issue of corruption in the judiciary.
Chief Justice Surya Kant stated that he has taken cognisance of the matter and indicated that the court may consider initiating suo motu proceedings. “I will not allow anybody to defame the institution. Law will take its course,” the Chief Justice remarked, underscoring the judiciary’s position on protecting the integrity of the institution.
The observations came amid scrutiny of the chapter’s content and its portrayal of judicial functioning. Further developments are expected as the court weighs its next steps.
