Syria President Al-Sharaa Goes Viral After Being Spotted ‘Doomscrolling’ Instagram At UNGA

Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa became the subject of online attention after he was seen using his phone during Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s address at the United Nations General Assembly.

Video footage from inside the General Assembly hall appears to show al-Sharaa scrolling through Instagram while Erdogan was addressing world leaders. The clip quickly spread across social media, with users commenting on the Syrian leader’s seemingly casual moment during the high-profile diplomatic gathering.

Some reports suggested that al-Sharaa was sharing Instagram reels while seated in the UN hall. However, the available footage does not establish whether he was sharing any content or what exactly he was viewing on his phone.

The video generated considerable discussion on X, where some users described the scene as relatable. One post referred to the moment as an unusually casual sight involving a world leader, while another joked about scrolling through social media during a speech.

Al-Sharaa’s UNGA Agenda

The viral clip surfaced shortly before al-Sharaa was due to deliver his own address to the UN General Assembly. His visit to New York comes as Syria’s new leadership seeks to expand diplomatic engagement and attract support for the reconstruction of the war-ravaged country.

Al-Sharaa has also used his visit to discuss Syria’s relations with Israel and other regional issues.

Speaking to reporters in New York, he said an Israeli withdrawal from a security zone it established inside Syrian territory would be an important first step before negotiations on potential agreements between the two countries could move forward.

He also said that achieving lasting peace remained possible.

“The Golan Heights is Syrian territory under recognition of the United Nations… So there is no discussion,” al-Sharaa said.

Syria’s Diplomatic Push

Al-Sharaa’s New York visit comes amid intensive diplomatic activity surrounding Syria’s transition and reconstruction efforts.

During the trip, he has also met US lawmakers to discuss bilateral relations, developments inside Syria and broader regional issues. Reconstruction and economic recovery have remained key topics as Damascus seeks greater international engagement.
