California Teens Protest Closure of Transgender Youth Care Centre After Trump-Era Policy Shift

Just six months into Donald Trump’s second term as US President, sweeping policy changes are already making headlines—among them, the closure of the Centre for Transyouth Health and Development at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA), the largest public provider of gender-affirming care for minors in the United States. The move has triggered widespread protests, particularly among trans youth directly impacted by the decision.

According to a report by The Guardian, several teenagers have voiced their concerns and emotional distress over the closure. Eli, a Los Angeles teen, shared that the centre played a crucial role in his journey, providing him with mental health support and access to hormone therapy. “Sometimes I think: What would my life be if I never got this?” said another teen, Katie. “Losing this now would destroy my life.”

CHLA’s program had been operating since 1991 and had earned a reputation as both a treatment and research hub for gender-affirming healthcare. However, facing federal pressure and the threat of losing funding under new Trump administration directives, the hospital announced the centre would shut its doors on July 22.

In its official statement, CHLA cited several reasons for the decision—including a shifting federal policy environment, recent executive orders, California’s ongoing budget challenges, and direct threats to its federal funding.

The closure follows a broader legal and political trend. Just weeks ago, the US Supreme Court upheld Tennessee’s ban on gender-affirming care for minors, setting a precedent that has emboldened similar actions in other states. In response, several hospitals have reportedly begun scaling back or preparing to shutter their gender care programs.

For the teens protesting the decision in California, the issue goes beyond healthcare access. Many see the closure as part of a larger effort to restrict the rights and autonomy of transgender youth. “This isn’t just about a centre closing,” said one protester. “It’s about erasing support systems we fought hard to build.”
