Three-Time Asian Para Games Gold Medallist Neeraj Yadav Dies By Suicide
Indian para-athletics has suffered a major loss with the death of three-time Asian Para Games gold medallist Neeraj Yadav, who reportedly died by suicide after allegedly consuming poison at his residence. A postmortem examination was underway at a Delhi hospital on Wednesday, as authorities continued to establish the circumstances surrounding his death.
S Satyanarayana, head coach of the Indian para-athletics team, confirmed the news, expressing grief over the athlete’s death. He said he had received information about the incident but that Yadav’s body was still at the hospital.
Describing the incident as deeply unfortunate, Satyanarayana said he could not speculate on the exact circumstances behind the tragedy.
Doping Suspension Kept Neeraj Yadav Out Of Asian Para Games
The 42-year-old athlete, who competed in the F55 category, had reportedly been under emotional stress after missing the Asian Para Games in Aichi-Nagoya earlier this month because of a doping suspension. However, the precise circumstances surrounding his death remain unestablished, and no definitive link between the suspension and the incident has been confirmed.
Yadav was among India’s accomplished para-athletes, having won three gold medals at the Asian Para Games during his career. He secured the javelin throw title at the 2018 Games in Jakarta before winning gold in both the javelin and discus events at the 2023 edition in Hangzhou.
His achievements established him as a prominent name in Indian para-athletics, particularly in seated throwing events.
From Post-Polio Paralysis To International Sporting Success
Yadav was diagnosed with post-polio residual paralysis at the age of seven. Despite the challenges associated with the condition, he pursued sports and initially took up wheelchair tennis before moving into para-athletics.
His transition to athletics marked the beginning of a successful international career, during which he represented India and won multiple major titles.
Yadav competed in the F55 classification, which includes seated field events such as the shot put, discus and javelin. His performances at the Asian Para Games brought him recognition as one of India’s successful athletes in the category.
His death has brought renewed attention to the challenges athletes can face when dealing with setbacks in competitive sport. The circumstances of the incident remain under investigation.
