CBI To Challenge Delhi HC Bail Order For Kuldeep Sengar In Unnao Rape Case.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday announced that it will challenge the Delhi High Court’s decision granting bail to former BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar in the 2017 Unnao rape case, and will approach the Supreme Court at the earliest.
The CBI said it had thoroughly examined the order, which suspended Sengar’s life sentence while his appeal against conviction is pending. The agency will file a Special Leave Petition (SLP) seeking to set aside the relief granted to the convict.
“CBI has studied the orders of the Division Bench of the Delhi High Court in the Unnao Rape Case and has decided to file an SLP before the Supreme Court at the earliest against the orders granting bail to the accused,” a spokesperson said. The agency had previously opposed both Sengar’s appeal and his bail petition in the Delhi High Court, filing detailed submissions against suspension of the sentence.
A senior CBI official said, “It is we who investigated and secured the conviction after trial. There is no question of going soft on this matter.”
Rahul Gandhi Meets Survivor
Earlier, the rape survivor, her mother, and activist Yogita Bhayana met Congress leader Rahul Gandhi at 10 Janpath, New Delhi. The survivor’s family placed three requests before him regarding legal support, personal security, and livelihood. Rahul Gandhi assured them of all possible assistance, with both he and Sonia Gandhi reportedly moved to tears during the meeting.
The survivor expressed her determination to seek justice, saying she intends to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Droupadi Murmu, and Home Minister Amit Shah.
Survivor’s Mother Manhandled During Protest
On Wednesday, security personnel allegedly stopped the survivor and her mother from protesting near Mandi House against the Delhi High Court’s decision, reportedly manhandling the elderly woman. Eyewitnesses said the mother was forced to jump off a moving CRPF-escorted bus, while the survivor remained on board. Notably, no women personnel were present on the bus.
Survivor Slams Delhi HC Order
Reacting to the bail order, the survivor said it was “the first of its kind in the nation” and expressed fear for the safety of women nationwide. “All daughters of the country are now afraid that criminals will get away… I have faith in the Supreme Court to deliver justice,” she said.
What The Delhi HC Ordered
The Delhi High Court on Tuesday suspended Sengar’s life sentence, stating he had already served over seven years in prison. He must furnish a personal bond of ₹15 lakh with three sureties of the same amount. The sentence suspension applies only to the rape case; Sengar remains in jail serving a 10-year term for the custodial death of the victim’s father and has not been granted bail in that case.
