New Zealand tighten grip with triple centuries, lead Zimbabwe by 476
New Zealand maintained their dominance in the two-match Test series, amassing a colossal 601/3 by stumps on day two against Zimbabwe at the Queen’s Sports Club in Bulawayo on Friday. Devon Conway (153), Rachin Ravindra (165) and Henry Nicholls (150) all struck centuries, powering the visitors to a 476-run lead heading into day three.
Conway, opening the innings, enjoyed some fortune en route to his fifth Test hundred, surviving a strong lbw shout against Vincent Masekesa when replays showed the ball missing leg stump. He eventually fell to Blessing Muzarabani, who jagged one back to deflect off Conway’s arm onto the stumps.
Nightwatchman Jacob Duffy, promoted before lunch, impressed in his debut Test innings with a gritty 32 before Masekesa removed him. His knock ensured the middle order entered with New Zealand already in complete control.
Nicholls, standing in for the rested Tom Latham, compiled his 10th Test century with patience and precision, rotating the strike and dispatching loose deliveries. At the other end, Ravindra counterattacked from the outset, peppering the boundary 21 times and clearing it twice to notch his second Test ton at a rapid pace, keeping the scoring rate brisk.
By the close, Zimbabwe’s bowlers looked worn after more than two days in the field. With the pitch wearing and a massive cushion in hand, New Zealand are expected to declare early on day three and unleash their attack.
The first Test ended inside three days, and with New Zealand’s bowlers fresh, a repeat result looks likely. Zimbabwe’s challenge now is not only survival, but finding the resolve to drag the contest into the final two days.
