At least 14 Maoists were killed in two separate encounters with security forces in Chhattisgarh’s Sukma and Bijapur districts on Saturday, officials said, marking one of the largest recent anti-insurgency operations in the Bastar region.

Twelve Maoists were killed in Sukma, while two others, including a cadre identified as Hunga Madkam, were neutralised in Bijapur. Weapons recovered from the Bijapur site included one self-loading rifle (SLR) and a 12-bore rifle.

The Sukma operation was launched late Friday by the District Reserve Guard (DRG) in Palodi and Potakpalli areas of Kistaram police station limits, based on intelligence about Maoist activity. Automatic weapons, including AK-47 and INSAS rifles, were recovered, officials said.

In Bijapur, the encounter began around 5 am in a forested area after a DRG team launched an operation on specific intelligence inputs. Intermittent firing continued, and further details are awaited, officials added.

The operations were being closely monitored by Sukma Superintendent of Police Kiran Chavan.
