Club World Cup: Al-Hilal Stun Real Madrid With Draw as Man City, Juventus Record Opening Wins.
The Xabi Alonso era at Real Madrid began on a flat note as the Spanish giants were held to a surprising 1-1 draw by Simone Inzaghi’s Al-Hilal in their opening match of the FIFA Club World Cup on Thursday, June 19.
Real Madrid started strongly, with 21-year-old Gonzalo Garcia finishing off a sharp counter-attack to put them ahead early in the first half. Despite dominating possession and registering seven shots on target, Madrid failed to add to their tally.
Al-Hilal, however, grew into the game and were handed a lifeline when Raul Asensio committed a clumsy foul on Marcos Leonardo inside the box. Ruben Neves converted the resulting penalty with composure, placing his shot to the right to level the score.
Madrid had multiple chances to regain the lead, including a late penalty opportunity in the 90th minute after Mohammed Al-Qahtani fouled Fran Garcia. With Kylian Mbappe sidelined due to illness, Fede Valverde stepped up but was denied by goalkeeper Yassine Bounou, who guessed correctly and preserved the point for Al-Hilal.
New signing Trent Alexander-Arnold made his competitive debut for Madrid but had a quiet outing, showing glimpses of his trademark long passing without making a significant attacking impact.
Foden Shines for City, Juventus Run Riot
Elsewhere, Manchester City made a confident start with a 2-0 victory over Morocco’s Wydad AC. Phil Foden was the standout performer, scoring one goal and assisting another for Jeremy Doku. The win was slightly marred by Rico Lewis being sent off late in the match for a high challenge while contesting possession.
Juventus, under new manager Igor Tudor, began their campaign in emphatic fashion with a 5-0 demolition of Al-Ain FC. Randal Kolo Muani and Francisco Conceição each scored twice, while Kenan Yildiz also got on the scoresheet in a dominant display to close out matchday one.
