Sangli Teen Dies After Alleged Assault by Father Over Low NEET Mock Test Scores.

In a deeply disturbing incident from Maharashtra’s Sangli district, a 17-year-old student preparing for the NEET medical entrance exam died after being allegedly beaten by her father for scoring poorly in a mock test.

The victim, Sadhna Bhonsle, had previously achieved an impressive 92.6% in her Class 10 board exams, a score many students aspire to. However, during her NEET preparation, she reportedly scored low marks in a recent practice test—an outcome that allegedly enraged her father, Dhondiram Bhonsle, a school teacher by profession.

According to police, in a fit of anger, the father beat Sadhna severely with a stick, causing serious head injuries. She was rushed to Ushakal Hospital in Sangli but succumbed to her injuries before she could receive treatment.

The incident occurred on June 22, and a police complaint was filed by the girl’s mother the same day. The father was subsequently arrested and placed in police custody until June 24.

“The father has confessed to assaulting his daughter due to her low scores in a NEET mock test. An investigation is ongoing,” said a police official.

The case has triggered outrage and renewed focus on the immense academic pressure faced by students, particularly those preparing for competitive exams like NEET. Advocates and educators have called for urgent attention to mental health awareness and parental expectations in India’s education system.

Sadhna’s death is a tragic reminder of the need for compassion, support, and open communication between students and families during high-pressure academic journeys.
