Neeraj Chopra Wins Gold in Ostrava on Debut with 85.29m Throw.

India’s Olympic hero Neeraj Chopra claimed the gold medal on his debut at the Ostrava Golden Spike meet on Tuesday, June 24, with a winning throw of 85.29 metres. While he fell short of his personal best of 90.23m, the performance was enough to dominate the field at this prestigious World Athletics Continental Tour (Category A) event.

Neeraj’s victory comes just four days after he clinched gold at the Paris Diamond League, marking his second consecutive first-place finish this season.

Solid Performance, But Self-Driven Goals Remain
The two-time Olympic medallist delivered a consistent series, registering four legal throws, all beyond the 80-metre mark. On his final attempt, he rallied the Ostrava crowd, but after sensing it would not surpass his best of the day, he intentionally overstepped the foul line—a sign of the high personal standards the champion continues to set for himself.

Despite securing gold, Neeraj appeared disappointed post-competition, signaling he was aiming for a more significant mark—possibly a statement throw in the lead-up to upcoming marquee events.

Surprise Podium Finishers
South Africa’s Douw Smith surprised the field with a personal best of 84.12m, securing silver, while former world champion Anderson Peters took bronze with a throw of 83.63m. Germany’s Julian Weber, one of Neeraj’s top rivals and a strong contender for Paris 2024, was absent from the competition.

Rio 2016 Olympic gold medallist Thomas Rohler finished seventh with a modest 79.18m, reflecting his continued struggles with form and fitness.

Focus Shifts to Neeraj Chopra Classic
Neeraj’s Ostrava victory is a significant boost ahead of the Neeraj Chopra Classic, India’s first major international javelin meet, scheduled for next month. With his current form, the Indian champion is well-positioned to inspire a new era in Indian athletics, both on home soil and the global stage.
