Debate Over Deepika Padukone’s Work-Hour Demand Intensifies as Filmmaker Labels It ‘Unreal.’
Bollywood continues to buzz over Deepika Padukone’s exit from Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s upcoming film Spirit, reportedly due to her request for an eight-hour workday. The move has reignited conversations about work-life balance in the film industry, especially for actors juggling personal and professional commitments.
While several celebrities have voiced their support for Deepika, veteran filmmaker Suneel Darshan has criticized the actress’s reported demand. In an interview with IANS, Darshan said, “An actor requesting an 8-hour shift is unrealistic unless they guarantee continuous work during those hours. Producers should get that commitment in writing.”
He further added that no actor is irreplaceable, stating, “There was a time when Deepika wasn’t even in the industry. There are always new talents waiting for a break.”
Reports earlier this year suggested that Deepika was removed from Spirit, opposite Prabhas, due to her conditions related to working hours, compensation, and profit-sharing, which reportedly didn’t align with the director’s expectations. Deepika, who recently became a mother, is said to be prioritizing a healthier work-life balance, seeking reduced on-set hours.
Meanwhile, several members of the film fraternity have supported her stand. Actor Vikrant Massey, actress Rashmika Mandanna, and director Anurag Basu have spoken out, calling for greater flexibility and empathy in the demanding film industry.
“The entire country is talking about flexible work hours. These are internal team decisions and personal choices,” Rashmika said during a recent interview with Mojo Story.
As the debate unfolds, it continues to raise important questions about sustainable work culture in Bollywood — and whether India’s film industry is ready to adapt to evolving expectations from top-tier talent.
