Rajgir fans demand bigger sporting events, say Asia Cup 2025 is just the beginning

Sports in Rajgir: Fans, Passion, and a Growing Hub for International Events.

Sports is nothing without fans. While often called a cliché, in India it holds real weight — leagues and teams thrive on the energy of their supporters. Take the IPL, for instance. Its massive success owes as much to the fans as to the cricket itself.

So, when a city like Rajgir — surrounded by scenic hills and renowned for Nalanda University — was chosen to host the Men’s Asia Cup, there were doubts about whether it could match the energy of bigger metros. But the crowd turnout has proved otherwise. After the Women’s Asian Champions Trophy earlier this year, the Men’s Asia Cup has confirmed that Rajgir was the right call.

Despite the heat and humidity, fans have filled the stands with enthusiasm. Earlier in August, the Emirates U20 Rugby Championships also drew good crowds, and the Asia Cup has carried that momentum. For Rajgir’s sports lovers, this feels like just the beginning.

Fans Speak: ‘We Want More’
Shekhar, a banker, even skipped work to catch the action.
“I got the right chance to turn up for the matches, so I decided to come in,” he said with a smile.

For Shejuti and Emon, students from Bangladesh at Nalanda University, the thrill was personal. With Bangladesh replacing Pakistan in the tournament, they finally got to cheer for their home team live.
“It is really great. The last tournament was women’s hockey, but we missed it. This time, we didn’t want to lose the chance. Bangladesh should win this one,” said Emon.

And they did. Bangladesh thrashed Chinese Taipei 8-3 on August 30 to keep their Super 4 hopes alive. For the duo, however, the bigger dream is seeing more sports and, someday, Bangladesh’s cricket team playing in Rajgir once the new stadium opens.

“The Bihar government is taking initiative. In two or three years, we may see bigger events,” added Shejuti.

‘Metro-Style Thrill at Home’
For Rajgir locals, the experience feels surreal. Mohammed Shahbaz, a die-hard sports fan, was overjoyed to see international stars in his hometown.
“These are events I thought I would only see in metro cities like Delhi or Mumbai. Now, I get the same thrill in Rajgir,” he said.

He credited Bihar CM Nitish Kumar for transforming Rajgir into a budding sports hub.
“Without him, it would not have been possible. His contribution is very big,” Shahbaz added.

Rajgir’s Next Leap
The excitement around the Asia Cup has given Rajgir’s fans a taste of international action, and they are hungry for more. With a cricket stadium in the works and growing government backing, Rajgir is positioning itself as a future sports capital.

“Rajgir will emerge as a sports hub. As an education hub, it was already well known, with Nalanda University. Now, sports will add a new identity,” said Shekhar.

The journey is only beginning, but the passion of fans ensures one thing: Rajgir is ready for the big league.
